The Minnesota Twins called up 24-year-old pitcher Zebby Matthews from their Triple-A club in St. Paul to start Sunday’s road game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Matthews allowed four runs in three innings, snapping the Twins’ 13-game winning streak. Minnesota also added outfielder Carson McCusker to the roster and placed reliever Danny Coulombe on the injured list. Two other starters, Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, are already out with concussions.
The Minnesota Twins brought right-handed pitcher Zebby Matthews up from the St. Paul Saints to start Sunday’s game in Milwaukee. Matthews, 24, pitched three innings and gave up four runs on five hits in a 5-2 loss to the Brewers. He struck out five batters and walked three. The loss ended Minnesota’s 13-game winning streak.
Matthews finished last season with the big-league club, going 1-4 with a 6.69 earned-run average (ERA) in nine starts. At Triple-A this year he has been sharper, posting a 2-1 record and a 1.93 ERA with 38 strikeouts and nine walks in 32 ⅔ innings.
The Twins also promoted Carson McCusker, a 26-year-old outfielder who has yet to play in the majors. The 6-foot-8 slugger is hitting .350 with 10 home runs and 36 runs batted in over 38 games for St. Paul.
Before Sunday’s game the Twins’ pitchers had thrown three straight shutouts, building a club-record streak of 34 scoreless innings—stretching past any shutout run since the franchise moved to Minnesota in 1961.
To make room for Matthews, reliever Danny Coulombe went on the 15-day injured list with a left forearm strain, retroactive to Thursday. Coulombe has not allowed a run in 16 ⅔ innings this season.
“It’s obviously not good, but I’m not overly concerned,”
manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He’s shown good improvement, but he’s not ready to pitch quite yet.”
Coulombe is the third Twin added to the injured list this weekend. Shortstop Carlos Correa and center fielder Byron Buxton landed on the seven-day concussion list after colliding Thursday in Baltimore.
To clear a spot for McCusker on the 40-man roster, rookie Luke Keaschall was moved to the 60-day injured list. Keaschall broke his right forearm on April 25.
No local community relief or charity efforts connected to these roster moves were reported.
