Passport-holders of 12 countries have now been banned from entering the United States. They are: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Irritriya, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
Seven more countries – Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela – are not significant but complete restrictions on travel.
Section four of the travel ban involves a clear discount for sports stars traveling to those competitions – and other “major” sports programs.
It states that “a member of any athlete or an athletic team, including coaches, travels to a person playing an essential support role, and immediate relatives, World Cups, Olympics, or other major sports programs set by the Secretary of State” can still travel to the US.
IOC Vice President Nicole Hoverts said, “Two hundred and six countries are preparing to come to the Games.”
“The federal government has given us this guarantee … To ensure that these participants will be able to enter the country … we are very confident that it is going to be fulfilled.”
Along with the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games at Los Angeles, the USA will co-condemn the FIFA World Cup in 2026 with Canada and Mexico.
