Every day, Allociné recommends a film to (re) see on TV. Tonight: a jewel that does not age, even seventy-five years after its cinema.
When the Twentieth Century-Fox buys, on a whim, the short news The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, it gives neither more nor less than a real masterpiece of cinema. And for good reason, the discovery of this story gave a superb idea of scenario to director Joseph L. MANKIEWICZ: to make a satire on the cruel world of the spectacle, while drawing the portrait of two women.
This is how, in 1951, the Eve feature film in 1951. Eve Harrington (brilliantly embodied on the screen by Anne Baxter) receives, from the hands of an old actor, the Prix Sarah Siddons. The entourage of it remembers its ascent made of love, hatred, worship and betrayal.
A multi-recomposed and adapted scenario adapted to Broadway theater in 1970. In the casting ofEvewe find Anne Baxterbut also Bette Davis, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, or Marilyn Monroe (still very little known to the general public). An exceptional cast for this classic cinema.
Mankiewicz's masterpiece
Acclaimed by criticism when it was released seventy-five years ago, Eve won six Oscars out of fourteen nominations (a record for the time): best film, best production, best sound, best suitable scenario, best costumes, or even best actor for a supporting role for George Sanders.
To this long list is also added a reward for the Golden Globes (best script), another at Bafta Awards (best film), and two at the Cannes Festival in 1951 (special jury prize and female interpretation prize for Bette Davis). Just that!
You will undoubtedly have understood, the unforgettable performance of Bette Davis And George Sanders will have left no one indifferent, as well as those of the actress Anne Baxter and actor Gary Merrillwho married Bette Davis At the end of the shooting (as in the film).
Noted 4.3 out of 5 by spectators, Eve is still considered today as the masterpiece of Joseph L. MANKIEWICZ. We therefore retain his excellent game of actors, but also his very numerous dialogues, wonderfully written, which invite reflection. Example with the following two:
“”Funny job, the career of a woman – these things that we abandon by climbing the ladder to go faster. We forget that we will need it again when we become a woman again“(Margo Channing)
“”I heard the public applaud, it's like waves of love that envelop you. Know that every night people admire you. They smile at you, their eyes shine, you made them happy. They want you. You are in your place. Just that is worth everything ” (Eve Harrington)
