Tonight on Netflix: this film is one of the best thrillers of all time, and it is French!

Noted on average 4.6 (!) Out of 5 by the press and 4.2 by spectators Allociné, holder of Nine César and the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, this French police film is one of the best of its kind. Having become a reference for actors like Michael B. Jordan or his director director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), a prophet marked his time, and he is currently available on Netflix.

“A pure genre film”

Malik is sentenced to six years in prison. On the spot, he confronts local factions and the violence of the human relationships which is coursing there. After being hit and flying, ripened by a desire for protection, he accepts the help of the Corsican mafia and in particular local godfather, César Luciani. But once the spiral of the crime has started, difficult to stop.

What interested the director Jacques Audiard and his co-series Thomas Bidegain in the scenario of Abdel Raouf Dafri and Nicolas Peufaillit, “It was the proposal of a contemporary genre film, in a decor little or not treated, the prison, and led by a really new hero in cinema. We wanted to make heroes from figures that we do not know, who have no iconic representation in the cinema, like Arabs for example. In France, cinema tends to stage them only in naturalist and sociological representations. A bit like western that highlighted faces that we did not know and which transformed them into a hero. “

If a prophet has marked his time and deserves to be (re) discovered, it is because he is of realism which brushes the documentary by telling the social ascent of a criminal within the prison environment. So pure gender film, yes, but which avoids the clichés of a staging of free voyeurism to dare to offer cinema, great cinema.

A prophet is carried by Tahar Rahim in the role of Malik and Niels Arestrup in that of César Luciani. We also meet Reda Kateb, Adel Bencherif, Gilles Cohen, Leïla Bekhti, and even in small roles Karim Leklou or the rapper Demon One, known for the untouchable group and member of the Mafia K'1 Fry.
