Between family drama and thriller, available on Paramount+, Xavier Legrand's first feature film is a work that is likely not to be unscathed.
Miriam and Antoine Besson are divorced. They have two children. Joséphine, the eldest, is practically major, but her little brother, Julien, only 11 years old. During the judgment, his mother asked to obtain exclusive custody, accusing her husband of physical violence against her children. The young boy himself declares that he no longer wanted to see his father again. Despite everything, the alternating guard is pronounced, and Julien is therefore obliged to spend a weekend in two alongside Antoine.
4.2 out of 5 stars
A true cinematographic uppercut, the first feature film by French filmmaker Xavier Legrand (adapted from his short before losing everything) left no one insensitive when he was released in theaters in 2018.
With a magnificent average of 4.2 out of 5 by the spectators of Allociné (and therefore rightly considered as one of the best French films of the last decade), until the guard seems to have put everyone in agreement by also winning 4 major César, therefore that of the best film and that of the best actress for Léa Drucker.
Indeed remarkable, the performance of the actress is enriched by that of Denis Ménochet (absolutely terrifying and an almost unbearable physical presence), as well as by the authenticity and the disturbing sincerity of the young Thomas Gioria.

Prestige references
Three exceptional actors who carry this striking work at arm's length, of a tension to be cut with a knife, constantly increasing, until flirting this family drama with the thriller, even with the horror film. This is evidenced by the three prestigious references cited by Xavier Legrand in the film's press kit:
“Kramer against Kramer is a film about parental law that marked me a lot. We see, for the first time, a woman abandoning the exclusivity of her children's guard and he depicts, with terrible acuity, the pain of separation. The hunter's night shows how we can be uncompromising with the children to achieve his ends. Shining inspired me for the last part of my film Terror.
As subtle, effective and relentless as the play on words hiding in its title, until the guard is without doubt one of the last great shocks of French cinema. Not to be missed under any circumstances if you have a subscription to Paramount+.
