The Phoenician Scheme: After The Grand Budapest Hotel and L’Île aux Dogs, meet the fine team gathered by Wes Anderson for his new film

After The Grand Budapest Hotel, L’Île aux Dogs or Asteroid City, Wes Andersonfait its comeback with The Phoenician Scheme, already in theaters. Screened during the last Festival of Cannes, the film gives pride of place to its starry distribution!

An absolutely crazy project, in competition for the Palme d'Or

Once is not custom, the last feature film of the famous Wes Anderson competed at the Cannes Film Festival for the prestigious Palme d'Or. A fourth iteration for the director, three projects of which had already been enrolled in competition: Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023).

Since his first film, Bottle Rocket (1996), the moviegoers have become familiar with his recognizable, but yet inimitable style: fixed plans and models, writing mixing poetry and absurd, original composition signed Alexandre Desplats and, of course, starred distribution bringing together the biggest names in modern cinema. From Bill Murray to Léa Seydoux via Willem Dafoe, Wes Anderson has his group of regulars, regularly completed by new performers. And once again, the director can count on a crazy distribution, as disproportionate as the eponymous project.

The Phoenician Scheme is above all the project of Anatole “ZSA-Zsa” Korda, an enigmatic industrialist among the richest men in Europe, whose commercial activities, complexes in the extreme and a formidable brutality, have made the target not only of its competitors, but also world governments and, therefore, wage killers they use.

Korda is today engaged in the ultimate phase of a project as ambitious as it is decisive for his career: the Korda project of Maritime and Terrestrial Infrastructure of Phenicia, a vast operation of exploitation of a region long left abandoned, but with immense potential. The financial and personal risk is dizzying; threats against his constant life. It was at this precise moment that he decided to appoint and train his successor: Liesl, his twenty -year -old daughter (now nun), which he has lost sight of for several years.

To carry out this pharaonic project, as crazy as that of its main character, Wes Anderson can fortunately count on its distribution, which combines legendary headliners and new blood. Overview of the protagonists of The Phoenician Scheme before discovering the feature film indoor!

An eclectic but complementary head trio

Rewarded with Oscars and Cannes for his roles in Traffic et Che, famous for Usual Suspect, Sin City or Sicario, the Spanish-American actor Benicio Del Toro had already appeared at Wes Anderson, in one of the paintings of The French Dispatch. More than satisfied with their collaboration, the filmmaker offers him with The Phoenician Scheme a first disproportionate role, between brilliant omnipotence and crazy absurdity.

Unclassifiable character, Anatole “ZSA-Zsa” Korda could be the hero of a new Kafkai as much as a antagonist of the James Bond saga. Passionate esthete, uninhibited billionaire, ZSA-Zsa is ready to do anything to carry out the Korda project-or “Phoenician Scheme” for the spectator-, a company as disproportionate as his character.

But his ambitions are increasingly jealous and worried. His plan, in case of impromptu assassination? Make his only daughter, whom he has not seen since she was a child, her successor. But at 21, Liesl, an orphan of mother, is very pious and is preparing to pronounce her wishes to engage in religious orders. To camp the young woman, whose spectator marries the point of view, Wes Anderson gave only a 24 -year -old actress, still little known to the general public. And yet, the talent of Mia Threapleton is matched only by the greatness of her inheritance, since the young actress is none other than the girl… of Kate Winslet herself!

If the relationship of Liesl and ZSA-Zsa is chaotic to say the least-since father and daughter know each other little and the second is convinced that the first murdered his mother, accusation of which he will have to prove to be innocent-, a third element completes this pair and bring a touch of freshness and humor welcome: Bjorn Lund.

As his name seems to indicate, the young man is of Norwegian ancestry and serves as a tutor for the character embodied by Benicio Del Toro. ZSA-ZSA adoring to grow, there is not a minute that is not used as a learning: from a private jet flight to a family meal, ZSA-ZSA counts on Bjorn to teach him the sciences of which he is specialist, starting with entomology. But this one, behind his left and innocent looks, would he not play a double game …?

To interpret this endearing figure of candor, Wes Anderson set his sights on a master in the matter: Michael Cera. Unforgettable in Juno and Scott Pilgrim, where he embodied two idealistic prepubes, the actor returns to his first love to draw again in his characteristic ingenuity, delivering one of the lightest services of the year.

Together, Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera embody an explosive but perfectly complementary trio, capable of accomplishing the most surreal designs of ZSA-Zsa as much as to seduce cinephiles from all walks of life!
