While season 2 of “The Last of Us” has just ended, fans are already turning to the future of the series. Is a season 3 planned? Can a season 4 see the light of day?
After its critical and public success in 2023, The Last of Us returned for a second season. The broadcast of the suite of the adaptation of the video game work of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog, still overseen by Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, ended with a seventh and last heartbreaking episode.
Fans found the heroine Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in season 2 of The Last of Us, adapted from part of the plot of the game The Last of Us: Part II. Five years after the first season, Ellie embarks in a quest for destructive revenge, which will turn upside down, for the best and especially for the worst.
“The Last of Us” already renewed for a season 3
Even before the second season begins its broadcast, HBO renewed the series for a third season. The teams of The Last of Us were then welcomed by Francesca Orsi, executive vice-president of HBO programming, manager of dramatic series and HBO films:
“Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the whole team of executive producers, the actors and the shooting team have delivered a masterful suite and we are delighted to transmit the power of the narration of Craig and Neil in what we know how to be a third season just as moving and extraordinary”.
This news was not surprising when you know the popularity of The Last of Us and the trailer for its second season broke audience records. Above all, HBO seems to have great confidence in Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
But if this announcement was expected, it is reassuring because it promises to the public that the entire second video game The Last of Us will be adapted to television, season 2 adapting only part.
“We approached the second season with the goal of creating something we could be proud of”explains Craig Mazin, “The final result has exceeded our most ambitious objectives, thanks to our continuous collaboration with HBO and to the impeccable work of our actors and our team, who have nothing to envy to others. We are impatient to continue the history of The Last of Us with the third season!”
A season 4 of “The Last of Us” possible?
The third season of The Last of Us, already ordered by HBO, will certainly be longer than the second season according to Craig Mazin. In an interview for Colliderthe showrunner explained that “The way the story is led and the opportunities it offers are a bit different”especially due to Joel's death (Pedro Pascal).

“She is so impactful”he explains. “It is such a narrative bomb that it is difficult to detach from it. We cannot really take a break, put ourselves aside and tell a story like that of Bill and Frank”.
But for season 3, Craig Mazin believes that they will have more time to develop characters and stories. What is certain is that the possibility of a season 4 is looming well on the horizon.
“It is certain that it is impossible to finish this story at the end of the third season”estimates the showrunner, “Hopefully we will attract enough audience to return and finish the series with a fourth season. This is the most likely outcome.”
