The Handmaid's Tale: How does the dystopian series end? – News series

Attention, spoilers. The following paragraphs reveal the end of the series “The Handmaid's Tale”.

Shock series which marked the end of the 2010s and won numerous awards, The Handmaid's Tale was a symbol of struggle in an America governed by an unpredictable Donald Trump and upset by the cancellation of the Roe v law. Wade, which guaranteed women access to abortion in all states before the deadline for fetal viability.

Adapted from the novel The Handmaid's Tale: the scarlet servant From Margaret Atwood, the series immerses us in a dystopian and totalitarian society at the very low birth rate, women are divided into three categories: the wives, which dominate the house, the Marthas, who maintain it, and the servants, whose role is reproduction.

This multi-prime series with a dent-de-scie story over the seasons remains one of the major fictions in recent years. Fiction, which had sadly joined reality, ends this year after its sixth season which finally closes the fight of the heroine June (Elisabeth Moss) against Gilead and their oppression of women and minorities.

How does the series “The Handmaid's Tale” end?

Composed of 10 episodes, the sixth and last season recounts the final battle of Mayday, the Canadian resistance front against Gilead in which June actively participates. Luke (Ot Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) join the ranks of the Resistance. Serena tries to reform Gilead, while Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) realize what they have done and that Nick (Max Minghella) is confronted with difficult tests.

This last battle fought by June underlines the importance of hope, courage, solidarity and resilience in the continuation of justice and freedom. Will she achieve her ends in the face of oppression and danger? After many twists and turns of war, the movement finally succeeds thanks to unexpected aid.

In episode 9, Commander Joseph Lawrence sacrifices himself by exploding a bomb on the plane which leads the other commanders and leaders of the new Gilead (displaying a more progressive government to be accepted by the International Commission but being in reality always more oppressive), on the run in Washington.

Commander Lawrence has no choice but to get on board and die with them, but also Nick, who betrayed June. The death of these commanders allows Mayday to release the victims of this new Gilead to Boston.

The last episode of The Handmaid's Tale tells what the characters happens after this major victory. June sworn enemy, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) ends up apologizing sincerely to her and June finally forgives her. Serena will now have to fend for herself and build a new life with her son.

June finds all her allies, like Emily (Alexis Bledel), who had hidden as Martha, Janine (Madeline Brewer), released thanks to Aunt Lydia who remained Martha and who finds her daughter Charlotte, but also her mother and daughter Nicole, born from her relationship with Nick.

Hulu

Thanks to a fierce struggle, Mayday succeeds in freeing more and more cities and more and more states of Gilead control. But there remains an important mission for June: to find his daughter Hannah, born from her union with Luke.

What future for June?

June returns to Boston in the old house of the Waterford, where her servant's ordeal started, and where the whole story of The Handmaid's Tale started. She once again treads the ground of this home which testifies to her sufferings, her pains and her life as a servant and as a figure of struggle.

She releases a dictaphone and records some comments on the house by finishing on a poignant replica: “My name is Defred”. We understand that June, on Luke's advice, will write about what she has experienced, on the people around her and her struggle, to testify to her career to the rest of the world and perhaps inspire other women to join the fight.

The end of The Handmaid's Tale opens the suite, The Testaments, a new series already in production. Adapted from the novel of the same name of Margaret Atwood published in 2019, this sequence takes place fifteen years later and follows a new generation of young women struggling with the dark future that awaits them.

Growing up in Gilead is all they have known. They have no memory of the outside world before their indoctrination. The prospect of being married and living a life of servitude forces them to seek allies, old and new, to help them in their fight to gain their freedom and the life they deserve.

In the book, the story is told by three characters: Aunt Lydia, already present in the scarlet servant, Agnes, a young woman living in Gilead (who is actually Hannah, the daughter of June), and Daisy (who is actually Nicole, the other daughter of June), a young woman living in Canada.

Currently in production, The Testaments will be broadcast in the United States on Hulu in 2026 or 2027. For the moment, we do not yet know where this suite will be broadcast in France. But thanks to this sequel, we will definitely know the end of June and what happened to his daughters Hannah and Nicole.
