The Indian cricket team for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting June 20, has been announced. A big change is that Shubman Gill will be the new Test captain, with Rishabh Pant named as his vice-captain. This comes after regular captain Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and R Ashwin, retired from Test cricket. This series will be India’s first in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

Team India Squad Announced for England Test Series; Shubman Gill to Lead, Rishabh Pant Vice-Captain

Mumbai, May 24: The Indian cricket squad for the five-match Test series against England, which begins on June 20, has been officially announced. Along with the team, India has also got a new Test captain: Shubman Gill will be taking over the leadership.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s selection committee revealed an 18-member squad for the series starting next month. This announcement was highly anticipated, as the regular captain, Rohit Sharma, had retired from Test cricket earlier this month. Therefore, Shubman Gill will now be the new Test captain, with his term set to begin next month. Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the team’s vice-captain.

Big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin are no longer part of the Test team. Ashwin had announced his retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also declared their retirement from this format of the game earlier in May. Because of these changes, the squad includes some new faces, and some older players are making a comeback. The most notable return is Karun Nair, who is only the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket.

Here is India’s Test Squad:

Shubman Gill (Captain), Rishabh Pant (Vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav.

This tour of England, starting on June 20, will be India’s first Test series under the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. The first match will be played in Leeds from June 20 to 24. The second match will take place in Birmingham starting July 2. The third match will see both teams battle it out at Lord’s in London from July 10 to 14.
