After having embodied Agent Mike Banning again in the fall of the president in 2019, Gerard Butler found the director Ric Roman Wash the following year for a new challenge: Greenland – The last refuge. The apocalyptic thriller had the particularity of distinguishing itself not only by its dramatic intensity, but also by a discreet wink to a cinema monument, in the person of Stanley Kubrick.
In the film, we follow John Garrity (Butler), an engineer confronted at the end of the imminent world. In a global panic climate, the character tries the impossible to shelter his wife (interpreted by Morena Baccarin) and their son. If the film does not revolutionize the genre, it seduces with its permanent tension, its effective action scenes and its more human approach to disaster.

An outing in the midst of a crisis … and a nice success
Released during the pandemic, Greenland Even the same was very successful, generating more than $ 50 million at the world box office-a success that has also launched the production of a suite.
The intrigue of the first part is based on a giant comet rushing right on earth, forcing the authorities to select a handful of people to join underground shelters. A scenario that is part of the tradition of Hollywood disaster films, but with a more marked sensitivity for the emotions and the moral choices of the characters.
A discreet tribute to Arthur C. Clarke
What makes Greenland Even more interesting for science fiction lovers, it is a small detail not to neglect: the name given to the destructive comet, “Clarke”. As Télé-Loisirs explains, this is not a trivial choice but a tribute to Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary writer to whom we owe 2001: the space of space, adapted to the cinema by Stanley Kubrick In 1968. This wink strengthened the symbolic link between the two works: the fascination for space, the cosmic dangers, but also the place of humanity in the face of the unknown.
Arthur C. Clarke had also explored a similar theme in his novel The hammer of Godpublished in 1993, which stages an asteroid giant threatening the earth in the 22nd century, and the efforts of a spatial mission to divert the trajectory – a story that is reminiscent of the intrigues of Deep Impact, Armageddon and of course Greenland.
