Released 182 years ago, this fantastic book is one of the most mythical works in literature, and he will be entitled to a new adaptation

Director of “Nosferatu” and “The Lighthouse”, Robert Eggers will tackle a classic of literature: “a Christmas song” by Charles Dickens, the time of a film of which Willem Dafoe could be the main actor.

That Robert Eggers loves myths, tales and legends is no secret for anyone. In any case not those who have seen even one of the films of the English director, to whom we owe The Vvitch, The Lighthouse, The Northman or the recent remake of Nosferatu, and who is preparing to attack the figure of the Loup-Garou with Werwulf, whose shooting is scheduled for next year. Before a very large piece.

Deadline reports that Robert Eggers will write and direct a new adaptation of a Christmas song, a timeless classic by Charles Dickens published on December 19, 1843 and sold to several million copies since (including 6,000 in a single day at the time of its release). Considered by its author as his most perfect work, the tale focuses on Ebenezer Scrooge, an old grumpy man, misanthropic and stingy that the end of year celebrations make a little more mean.

From Disney to Doctor Who

Until the visit of three Christmas ghosts, representing the past, the present and the future, give it a lesson in life and allow it to change throughout it. If we tell you about the end of the story, it is because there are few who do not know it, for having read it or having seen one of its many adaptations, which flourished in 1901. Among these, the best known are the short film of Mickey's Christmas, Christmas with the Muppets (with Michael Caine), ghosts in celebration (with Bill Murray) or even the funny Christmas Zemeckis, in which the performance capture offered Jim Carrey the possibility of embodying nine characters.

Without forgetting the series which, from Xena the Warrior to Glow, via Smallville or Doctor Who, were more or less directly inspired by this tale, of which Steven Knight signs a television adaptation carried by Guy Pearce in 2019. So many examples which only strengthen the status of classical work (which has also inspired a comic book devoted to Batman) Eggers that will reverse the trend, quite the contrary.

Willem Dafoe in scrooge?

If there is still no indication of the approach that will be his, the combination of supernatural elements and Victorian England make it an ideal playground for the one we imagine flirting in a more or less pronounced way with the Gothic horror, thanks to a stylized staging. And it will most certainly be with his favorite actor, Willem Dafoe, who was in the credits of his last three opus and presents himself as the filmmaker's first choice for the role of De Scrooge, in which he would be perfect.

For the moment, this rereading of a Christmas song has no date of filming or release, but we can, without getting too wet, imagine that it will be released at the holidays, a predilection niche of Robert Eggers since it was at this moment that we discovered The Lighthouse and Nosferatu, while Werwulf will be released in our rooms on December 30, 2026.
