Fans of Julianne Moore, this film is made for you! Echo Valley tells the story of Kate Garretson (Moore), owner of an isolated farm in Pennsylvania, and mourning since the sudden death of his wife. As if her sentence was not enough, she must protect her daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), a young woman plagued by a serious addiction to the heroine.

When Claire arrives with her mother, she luggards all her problems with her. His addiction, his boyfriend, worthy representative of the nightmare of any parent, his toxicity. After an argument of incredible violence, Claire reappears again with her mother … But this time, not to extract money (which she does not have). But with a corpse hidden at the back of his car …

Kate then finds herself immersed in a waking nightmare, having to work to draw on the depths of maternal love to take out her daughter from there. Even devastated by the recent death of his partner, Kate is more than ever ready to do anything to save clear, even if it means crossing the limits of morality.

Faced with Julianne Moore, still imperial, Sydney Sweeney, unrecognizable and overwhelming, embodies a fragile but dangerous clear, whose dependence and self -destructive choices jeopardize the lives of all those around her. It is a problem with problems and thus, the ideal way to explore the complexity of a mother-daughter link subject to unbearable tensions.

Brad Ingelsby: The link with Mare of Easttown

The scenario, signed Brad Ingelsby, creator of the excellent series Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet, gives Echo Valley a rare psychological depth in the genre of thriller. As in Mare of Easttown, we find a strong woman, in mourning, not made up (it's accessory but notable for actresses of this caliber), confronted with extreme family and emotional dilemmas. Kate, like Mare, embodies a mother ready for anything for her loved ones, even when reality seems to escape her.

We recognize in this scriptwriting kinship the richness of the characters and their complexity. Ingelsby accurately portrays the pain, frustration and the inner fight of a woman who must juggle between her unconditional or even blind love and the need to protect her daughter against herself.

The arrival along Jackie (Domhnall Gleeson), a low -level but nevertheless ruthless dealer, even more upset the precarious balance of the family. He arrives because Claire owes him money and it is his mother that he will attack. Jackie is not only an antagonist: he embodies the constant threat that weighs on Claire and Kate. Her financial blackmail and violent threats establish a palpable tension that forces Kate to make extreme decisions to protect her daughter and herself.

A narrative construction that reserves many surprises

Writing carefully, Echo Valley deploys an intrigue rich in reversal of the situation. If we were in the family drama at the beginning, we completely switch to the side of the thriller in the second part of the film which is mainly due to a confrontation between Kate and Jackie.

If we prefer not to reveal to you what turn the film takes so as not to spoil the surprise, we remain however dazed by this turn and change of tone. The always formidable Fiona Shaw, who plays a close friend of Kate, also contributes to this second part and her singular bias.

The tension rises crescendo, each revelation calls into question what the spectator thought he understood. The writing of Brad Ingelsby, combined with the staging of Michael Pearce, makes this thriller an emotional and moral puzzle, whose unexpected end leaves a strong impression.
