Netflix puts big on this family drama with the scent of scandal. Between family inheritance in danger and drug trafficking, the Buckley could create surprise among the summer series.
He's a bit like Scream's masked killer. Iconic and indestructible. And this is probably the reason why Netflix set his sights on him: Kevin Williamson. The platform is launching its new drama The Waterfront today, a series that promises to captivate spectators with its family intrigues and dramatic tensions.
Created by Williamson, the genius behind successes such as Dawson and Scream, this new work recounts the fight of a family in the face of the forfeiture of their fishing empire in the fictitious city of Haveport, in North Carolina.
Kevin Williamson describes The Waterfront as a story where the characters, indebted and at the foot of the wall, are pushed to make increasingly desperate decisions. “”They perform bad deeds, then sink more and more“He said to Tudum. This mixture of family drama and moral dilemmas is eyeing (by far) on productions like soprano, while offering a very different atmosphere and anchored in the south of the United States.
A family in crisis
At the heart of this series, the Buckley family, represented by an impressive cast. Holt McCallany, known for his role in Mindhunter, embodies Harlan Buckley, the patriarch badly in point and focused on the bottle seeking to save his business.
Maria Bello plays the role of Belle, his pragmatic wife, and Jake Weary infiltrates the skin of Cane, their son wishing to prove his value. Melissa Benoist, on the other hand, plays Bree, a mother in Désintox who fights to get custody of her son while breaking in a dangerous relationship.
The series emphasizes how the need for survival can push ordinary people to commit extraordinary, and often illegal acts. According to Williamson, The Waterfront explores the concept of “lesser evil“In desperate situations.”It's a story of people who make mistakes“, He explains. And it is true that they chain them. But the series lacks this moral complexity which would make the scenario more credible.
As a good veteran of television, Williamson gives the series to the series with his share of improbable revelations at the end of each of the three episodes we saw. Enough to encourage the spectator without hesitation with the following episode.

A changing decor
Although Haventport is a fictitious creation, the series was shot in the beautiful decorations of Wilmington and Southport, in North Carolina. Williamson underlines the beauty of the coastal landscape: “It is a postcard image wherever you look“. This aesthetic contrasts with the dark choices of the characters.
This contrast between the picturesque environment and the desperate acts of Buckley differentiates the waterfront from other series, more generally rooted in an urban universe. The slightly moist and sticky side reminds series in places like True Blood where the dramas in Gogo contrast with the cute setting of the series.
And Kevin Williamson emphasizes the tension that draws action rather than his characters, he says that “The worst things can happen during the day, and the best at night“. It is the game of oppositions that seems to motivate it in this hectic story.
The Waterfront therefore promises to be a must for lovers of family drama. The combination of a classic but effective narration, a talented casting and a stylized aesthetic could well make this series the next success of the platform. The followers of Williamson's stories will certainly find their account in this summer novelty.
