In June 2023, the world was suspended from the fate of the Titan. Netflix returns to this tragedy which led to the implosion of the submersible near the wreckage of the Titanic.
The documentary Titan: The sinking of Oceangate plunges today on Netflix at the heart of the history of Stockton Rush, CEO of Oceangate, and its desire to democratize the underwater exploration. His goal? Take wealthy tourists Admire the wreckage of the Titanic aboard an innovative, but risky submersible. (Roughly speaking, the same idea as Jeff Bezos with his trips in space, but this time at twenty thousand leagues under the seas.)
The film shows how Stockton Rush ignored the warnings concerning the security of the Titan, notably those of David Lochridge, former director of marine operations of Oceangate, which in bonus was dismissed for having expressed his concerns.
Fatal errors
The feature film highlights the controversial technical choices of Rush, in particular the use of a carbon fiber shell, a material never tested at such depths. The documentary also unveils audio recordings and exclusive testimonies that point to the shortcomings and pressures that have led to the disaster.
The film gives the floor to experts in underwater exploration, such as Rob McCallum, and to Sydney Nargeolet, daughter of the famous explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet-wreck hunter, specialist in Titanic and director of the submarine research program on the wreck-who died on board the Titan. Their poignant testimonies offer precious light on the challenges of this tragedy.
Titan: Oceangate sinking is now available on Netflix.
