Game Preview:
Welcoming the Connecticut Sun for his first visit this season, the fever has returned to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday night. Indiana wants to bounce back after leaving two direct games, falling on the road from 90–88 in New York on Saturday and 83–77 against Washington on Wednesday night.
Indiana played her first game without the All-Star Point Guard Ketleen Clarke, which was sidelined for at least two weeks with a quad strain on Wednesday. Veteran Sydney Kose started in place of Clarke, while Dwanna Boner extended the scoring punch. Bonner has scored 21 points from the bench since the best game so far has been included in the free agency in this offsen, while 5-for-10 from the ground, 3-point range from 2-for-4 and free throw line from 9-for-9.
The third major scorer in WNBA history, Bonner crossed the 7,500 career points on Wednesday. On Friday, Boner will get a chance to face his former team. She played for the Sun for five sessions from 2020–24, while the three all-star team with The Sun formed.
Stephanie White, head coach of fever, gave Suraj coaching for two sessions for two sessions before returning to Indiana for his second term as a fever coach. White was named the WNBA Coach of the Year in 2023, went 55–25 in its two years in Connecticut, and Surya led the back-to-back semi-final appearances to Surya. Fear's assistant Brian January and Austin Kelly as well as player Vikas coach Keith Porter were also on staff with white in Connecticut.
The sun has a very different roster that White had coached in the last two years. All five from last year's roster moved to Offsen through free agency or trade. Only Marina Mabre and Olivia Nelson-Ododa are still on rosters.
Connecticut has struggled to start the season, being winners in their first five matches. Three of those five damage are 22 or more points.
Tina Charles, WNBA's second all-time major scorer, returned to the connecticut this season. Charles started his career with Surya from 2010-13 and was named WNBA MVP in 2012. Charles led the Sun in scoring (17 points per game) and rebounding (6.6 per competition). Mabrey provides 14.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.2 assistance.
