Dragons: release, info, casting … Know all about the live action adaptation of the animated film DreamWorks

Completed in 2019, the “Dragons” trilogy marked the spirits and conquered the public and returns today with a remake in real shots of the first opus. Here's what you need to know about it.

Between 2010 and 2019, the Dragons saga enchanted young and old, attracting 9 million spectators in France to 3 films. Internationally, the DreamWorks trilogy reported the tidy of $ 1.6 billion.

No dragons 4 …

Despite this critical and commercial triumph, the director Dean Deblois has always hammered it, there will be no 4th episode of dragons in the cinema. “The franchise is finished. The animated series is no longer broadcast, there is no longer any feature film project. If the studio decides to produce a new film, I hope they will choose another era and new heroes”he confided to our microphone in June 2019.

“I deliberately tried to make a satisfactory end to this trilogy so that we no longer touch it. And then, I always wanted to write this saga in three acts. Today, I have accomplished my mission and I am proud of these three films. But I am not holding the rights of the franchise so if they want to do something else, if they decide in the future to do another film, I hope they will not do it with my characters!confirmed Dean Deblois a year later in TV leisure columns.

The director is therefore very clear, there is no question of following a sequel to his trilogy. “I feel like I went to the end of my ideas and I really want to start a new project, to do something quite different. Why not cinema in real shots?”he told us during our interview in 2019.

… but a live dragons

Dean Deblois did not think so well by evoking a project in real shots. However, he will not be so different from what he believed. Indeed, in February 2023, Deadline announces that a new dragons is in preparation.

The film is a live action adaptation of the original work, directed by Dean Deblois in person. It is his first feature film in real shots. So far, he had only made animated films.

DreamWorks Animation

“In terms of references, And the alien is typically the kind of film that I would like to sign. Maybe I would do something for a family audience with fantastic or supernatural elements … in the style of a Harry Potter ! I also really like the films that explore memories and dreams. I am a big fan ofEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind of Michel Gondry“”he pointed out in 2020.

Obviously, the director preferred to return to his original universe, failing to have been able to materialize a different project. One can nevertheless wonder if Dean Deblois did not agree to take the reins to guarantee that the spirit of his saga will be intact.

“I know that it is essential to work in parallel on several stories because the projects can be abandoned overnight by the studios; I therefore hope to be able to develop an animation project in parallel with several scenarios in real shots. But what I am looking for above all is a story of adventure in an immersive world with supernatural elements”he explained to us during our interview in 2019.

What release date?

Upon announcement of the project, an release date was set by DreamWorks and Universal: March 12, 2025! Before a postponement to June 11 of the same year, due to the strike of screenwriters and actors who struck Hollywood in 2023.

In addition, does DreamWorks seek to walk in the footsteps of Disney with live remakes of his great animated successes (which could give something strange if Shrek was entitled to this treatment)? In a way of reviving one of its most loved and known brands? A bit of both of both?

Dragons Live Action, what will it tell?

It is not yet known in which direction will the intrigue of this live action dragons go. DreamWorks did not specify if the feature film will return to the sources of the story inspired by the novels of Cressida Cowell.

Like the animated version, it should, logically, bring us back to the time of the Vikings. Harold, son of Stoïk, village chief of Berk, befriends Krokmou, a wounded dragon, and discovers many things about these mythical creatures.

From the first images, a large part of the mystery was lifted, because they revealed that Krokmou would very strongly resemble the 2010 version, and that the story would remain faithful to that of its model.

The studio also evokes a “New chapter” In the story of friendship between the Viking Harold and the Dragon Krokmou. This does not completely deviate from the possibility that this remake is actually a suite.

An option that remains to be confirmed and would not immediately answer all the questions that can be asked about this film, which can just as well give a result of the quench of the live remake of Peter and Elliot the dragon as being a new Eragon.

Who will be in the cast of this live action dragons?

Gerard Butler will be back in the role of the gruff and Costaud Stoïk, Viking chief and father of the hero, to whom he lent his voice in the animated saga.

After Black Phone, of which he was the hero against the Croquemitaine played by Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames will play Harold, doubled by Jay Baruchel in the DreamWorks trilogy.

Seen in the first memorable sequences of season 1 of The Last of Us, in the guise of Joel's daughter (Pedro Pascal), Nico Parker will be Astrid. America Ferrera offered her stamp to him in animated feature films.

Note also the presence of Nick Frost in the guise of Gueulfor, to whom Craig Fergsuon lent his voice in the animated feature film.
