Fifteen years after its release, “Dragons” was entitled to his remake in real shots, visible in our rooms since June 11. Like his model, will Dean Deblois' film be entitled to a follow-up? We answer you.
Like Lilo & Stitch, which he also co-produced with Chris Sanders, Dragons is the second work signed Dean Deblois to be entitled to his remake in real shots this year. But with the same director at the controls, which is much rarer, while Gerard Butler takes up the role of Stoïk the brute to whom he lent his voice in the original trilogy. Because, yes, there are few who ignore that the 2010 feature film experienced two consequences in 2014 and 2019, which contributed to making the saga one of the best in the history of animation.
Many were then wondered if the director had a continuation in ideas, and it was not necessary to wait to discover the result before having a clear heart, since a second dragons in real shots was announced last April, during the Cinemacon (convention bringing together the operators of rooms from around the world) in Las Vegas. Its American release is already scheduled for June 11, 2027, and the film will undoubtedly arrive two days before in France, which means that the shots could start shortly.
Was it the plan as soon as the first part was started? Dean Deblois does not say it when we meet him in Paris, but claims to have had this possibility (and this idea that the character ages from one opus to another) in mind when choosing his main actor, Mason Thames: “I told myself that if the film was walking, we could make another one, and that a 15 -year -old actor [au moment du tournage du premier volet] would be perfect for embodying Harold in the future “explains the director.
Cate Blanchett back in the world of “Dragons”?
“So I thought about it a little, but we also looked for other actors, who looked a little younger. Age was not a determining factor.” But Mason Thames will be back in 2027 in the cinema, just like Nico Parker (Astrid) or Gerard Butler, who may not be the only actor in the original saga to be stunned. Since the announcement of the suite, many are those who wonder if Cate Blanchett will play Valka, the mother of the hero, to whom she lent her voice eleven years ago. Rightly.
“I also wish it”says Dean Deblois at Comicbook. “I imagine that she must be waiting for a scenario, but we have already struck her door. I had written the character of Valka for her, so I told her that she would be the first to refuse the role [dans la version en prises de vues réelles]. “ The good news, with an outing planned in 2027, is that we will be quickly fixed on its return or not.
“Correct imperfections of the second film”
On the other hand, it will be necessary to be more patient compared to the other question which often comes up on the subject of the film: Dean Deblois having never hidden from the second opus (made solo, without Chris Sanders), will he take advantage of the opportunity offered by this remake to review his copy? “Yes. I'm still waiting to see how it will be welcomed, and if the public will like it for its loyalty to the original material or if they claim more changes.”
“But I have my own list of regrets about this second film, knowing that it is the favorite episode of most fans. I want, as for the first, keep its best elements and make sure that the story works with them. But it should offer me the possibility of correcting the imperfections of the second film.” We are now very curious to see this.
