In 1993, the end of this adaptation of a famous video game announced a possible continuation which has never seen the light of day! Normal or unfair for a work that has caused a lot of ink to flow?
In 1993, the film Live Action Super Mario Bros landed on screens and wipped a bitter failure. With an estimated budget at $ 48 million, it struggles to collect 20 small million green tickets internationally.
Since then, the feature film continues to be mocked, considered one of the worst video game adaptations of all time. Nintendo was so traumatized by this fiasco that it took 30 long years before seeing a film stamped Big n on the big screen.
Having quickly acquired a reputation as a ultimate nanar, the feature film is strongly criticized by the press and the public, whether in terms of its script, its staging, its sets and especially its lack of loyalty compared to the world of video games.
With the Super Mario Bros in animation, released in April 2023, the company specializing in video games combined the bad fate, collecting $ 1.3 billion in global revenue. This triumph obviously convinced Nintendo to start a sequel, which will land on April 1, 2026.
A frustrating end
32 years ago, due to the critical and commercial failure of the first adaptation, the Kyoto firm completely killed in the egg the idea of a suite, which is logical. However, if you remember the outcome of the film, everything had been done to tell us an even crazier episode!
We found our two mustachi plumbers, Mario and Luigi, watching a report on television praising their exploits. Suddenly someone knocks on the door. “It's open!”Chairs Mario. Daisy then fades on the doorstep, armed and covered with dust, challenging the two brothers! “Luigi! Mario!” You have to come with me, I need your help! “
Luigi then asks: “What's going on?” Daisy replied: “You are not going to believe it!” Neither one nor two, Mario exclaims: “I believe it!” The two plumbers are equipped in speed and are about to start on an adventure. We will never know what the incredible event was talking about Daisy because this end did not lead anywhere!

“It's not worse!”you will tell me. However, it remains a little frustrating not to know if the production already had a story in mind for a second part. We imagine that this was not necessarily the case, this outcome having been written only in case of success at the box office, giving a starting point to a new adventure.
A nightmare shoot
However, a sequel would have been difficult to envisage, even in case of success. Indeed, filming was extremely difficult, especially due to constant rewriting of the script, even during the shots. The directors, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, were in constant conflict with producers and actors.
In addition, Bob Hoskins (Mario) and John Leguizamo (Luigi) publicly declared that they had hated making this film. With such an atmosphere, it is certain that no one wanted to start again.
Fun Fact: By accepting the role, Bob Hoskins did not know that he was going to shoot in a film adapted from a video game! It was his son who explained to him by showing him the game on Nintendo console! In any case, the shooting turned out to be infernal for the British actor.
With his partner John Leguizamo, who plays Luigi, they quickly understood that the film would end in a flop. The two actors then tried to forget these problems by emptying a few bottles. They were thus very often drunk on the set, convinced that there was nothing else to do.
Bob even broke his finger with a door when filming the pursuit by van. He had to wear a pink painted plaster to look like a hand. Questioned by The Guardian in 2007, Hoskins said: “The worst thing I have ever done? Super Mario Bros. It was a fucking nightmare. All the experience was a nightmare”he hammered.
